The first day of December is tomorrow and that means it is the official start of the holiday season ( t minus 25 days till Christmas ). These next few weeks are filled with holiday parties, family get togethers and preparation for the big day. With all of the celebrating that will be happening we sometimes forget about our healthy habits and give way to our temptations. But don’t worry because below I have listed 5 simple tips to help keep you on track and feeling your best this holiday season!
Tip #1 Don’t Focus on Food
We often associate the holidays with good food and good times, and often we focus in on the eating aspect of the holiday season. Now I love food, and I especially love my family’s traditional Ukrainian feast on Christmas Eve, but try to not to make food the main aspect of happiness for your holiday as this can result in an unhealthy relationship with your food. Instead focus on spending time with your loved ones and on enjoying your holiday rituals.
Tip #2 Plan Ahead
This time of year can become very busy which results in a lot of quick, last minute meals. I highly suggest taking the time to just plan out a few healthy snacks and meals that you can prepare ahead, allowing you to grab a quick bite to eat while running from here to there.
Tip #3 Indulge Wisely
Holiday Parties are usually filled with yummy and tempting food which can make it is easy to pile our plates full of sweet treats and decadent desserts. My advice in this situation is to indulge wisely, enjoy a few treats but don’t go over board, try to pick your favorite dessert and enjoy a reasonable portion of it. Or if you are like me and cannot say no to a simple cookie try creating a healthier version of your favorite dessert, for instance this recipe Here.
Tip #4 Make Healthy Decisions
Try to include a lot green vegetables, whole grains and lean meats on you plate during the holiday season, avoid or limit your use of gravies and rich sauces, remember to chew your food and slow your eating ( it’s not a race ), start to notice when you are becoming full and stay well hydrated.
Tip #5 Don’t Worry
Really, don’t worry so much! This time of year is full of temptations and if you happen to slip ( even if it is a relatively big slip ) try not to dwell on it! Enjoy yourself and please don’t beat yourself up about maybe indulging too much, or not having enough time to fit in a workout or anything else that is considered an “unhealthy” habit. Wake up the next morning, have some water, eat a healthy Breakfast and move on with your day!
I hope that these tips have helped you in some way, if you have any tips for me please let me know in the comments!
Happy Holidays Everyone!
